RMS INSPECTIONS

" a.k.a. the pink slip "

The e-safety check or AIS (Authorised inspection Station) Inspection is the annual registration inspection required in NSW in order to renew your vehicle registration with Transport NSW.

Transport NSW (previously the RMS / RTA) maintains vehicle inspection and certification schemes to make sure that all vehicles meet minimum safety requirements.

After our authorised inspectors conduct your vehicle inspection, the report will electronically submitted to Transport NSW. You may also be provided with a hard copy. Prior to renewing your vehicle registration, remember you must also renew the vehicles CTP (Compulsory Third Party) Insurance policy a.k.a Greenslip. With both a passed pink slip and a fully paid green slip you will be able finalise your annual registration renewal online via Service NSW or at a Service NSW Centre.

Generally, light vehicles more than five years old require an annual safety check before you can renew the registration. Light vehicles include:

  • All passenger cars
  • All motorcycles
  • Goods carrying vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Mass of 4.5 tonnes or less (without power-operated brakes)
  • Trailers and caravans with an aggregate trailer mass of 4.5 tonnes or less (including those fitted with breakaway brakes, but not including those fitted with air or vacuum (breakaway) braking systems).

" a.k.a. the blue slip "

Vehicles not currently registered in NSW require an Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection before they can be registered.

Inspection reports are valid for 42 days from the date of inspection.

After our Authorised Inspectors conduct the vehicle inspection, the report will automatically be sent to Transport NSW and you will be provided with a hard copy. The hard copy is required to be present at the time of vehicle registration at the Service NSW centre and cannot be reprinted. Should you misplace the blue slip, you will require another inspection and the inspection fee will be payable again.

In order to establish vehicle registration you will also require a CTP (Compulsory Third Party) Insurance Policy a.k.a Greenslip. This policy is not dependent on the Blue Slip inspection being completed first and either requirement can be completed at any time prior to establishing vehicle registration. In most circumstances, your previous registration license plates will need to be surrendered, new registrations can only be established for a 12 months and the process must be completed in person at a Service NSW centre.

Reasons you may need a AUVIS / Blue slip inspection include:

  • Registration that expired more than three months ago
  • If you’re bringing a vehicle into NSW from another Australian state, or another country
  • Vehicles with no number plates or that have been stripped of their number plates
  • Written off vehicles approved for re-registration.
  • To adjust vehicle registration records, for example because something about the vehicle has changed significantly, such as a new engine and engineering.
  • To further check vehicle structure & design, vehicle identity or to clear defect notices.

Disclaimer

$43 is the cost price for the e-safety check inspection and is payable prior to the inspection being carried out. This fee is dictated by Transport NSW and is payable regardless of the result of your vehicle inspection. Should you be afforded the opportunity to make payment after the vehicle inspection has been completed, this is a good faith gesture and not an opportunity to avoid payment. Light vehicle safety check inspection reports are valid for six months (excluding public passenger vehicles). If your vehicle fails the safety check, you will not be able to renew the registration until the required repairs are completed and a pass result is generated. You are not obliged to complete the required repairs at CAROLOGY. The AIS station will issue a Repairs Needed report (White Slip) showing what repairs are required. If the repairs are completed within 14 days, and the vehicle can be reassessed at the same AIS station, then no additional safety check fee is applicable. However should it takes longer than 14 days to complete repairs and schedule a second inspection, a new first inspection will be require and you will need to pay another safety check inspection fee of $43.
